The last strike at Algeciras was so long ago that no-one can actually remember when, but the looming prospect of job cuts brought on by the global downturn has re-kindled concerns over industrial action. Stevedore companies and APM Terminals signed a 10-year labour deal just before Christmas 2008, but the sub-contracted workforce could be the first victim of a fall in trade at Algeciras (see box). Subcontracted workers involved in maintenance are holding talks with management and local government agencies to share reduced work loads.
