Foreign retail giants foraying into India have opened up huge potential for container shipping. The recent interest in India from foreign retail majors stems from a move by New Delhi to open up the retail sector, allowing 51 % FDI in multibrand retail and 100% FDI in single-brand retail. Despite strong opposition from domestic firms and political interests, the country threw its doors open last year to foreign retailers, while attaching strict conditions to sourcing and investment policies. While several single-brand retail majors such as Brooks Brothers, Damiani, Decathalon, IKEA, Fossil, Le Creuset, Promod, Pavers England, and Zara are already setting up outlets in India, multi-brand giants such as Carrefour, Tesco, and Walmart have yet to make their presence felt, despite expressing a keen interest in the Indian market.
