A renewed slump in project and general cargo traffic late last year spelled a gloomy first quarter for breakbulk carriers but it looks as if the worst is over, according to Germany's BBC Chartering. The group, which has 130-150 multipurpose vessels (MPPs) in operation on routes worldwide, is now booking enough cargo to keep all its ships trading after idling some of them in port or at anchor in the first three months of this year, chief executive officer Svend Andersen told Fairplay. "For the first time we were having ships lying spot. The first three months were not satisfying. In fact it was probably the worst market we have ever seen," Andersen explained.
