Like shipowners, managers are much more vulnerable to volatility in a sector if they focus their capability on just one area of the business. That is the message coming through from a decision by Hamburg-headquartered Rickmers Group to add bulk carrier management to its long-established box ship business. Two recent contracts have seen Rickmers Shipmanagement take on technical and crewing responsibility for seven Supramax bulkers as of 1 April, as well as 21 vessels that have been transferred from Torvald Klaveness pools to exclusive chartering by Rickmers' 50% joint venture Harper Petersen.
