The Jones Act container trade to the US state of Hawaii is facing a surge in competition, and analysts believe announced newbuildings far exceed what that market can bear. Hawaii currently features two players: Matson and Pasha Hawaii. Athird - TOTE - has now joined the fray. TOTE, which operates in the Puerto Rico and Alaska domestic trades, announced a letter of intent in August to build two to four 3,700 teu container ships at Aker Philadelphia for deployment in the US west coast-Hawaii service.
