Maintenance on ships has traditionally been a mixture of planned and corrective systems where work was done strictly in accordance with machinery makers' recommendations or as a direct result of something going wrong. Currently, condition-based maintenance (CBM) is the order of the day. In itself, it would seem to offer cost savings and allow better use of resources, but it can also be taken a step further, particularly where large fleets are concerned. CBM makes use of software to transform raw data coming from sensors attached to, or integrated in, machinery into some form of meaningful information. Tests carried out away from the machine itself can provide further information, perhaps using shore laboratories or increasingly - especially where lube oil analysis is involved - using onboard portable test equipment.
