In recent years, ships'radars have been complemented by the installation of AIS equipment but since not all ships and small craft are obliged to fit AIS, its use can be somewhat limited. Many from within the industry have said that too much emphasis is placed upon technology rather than human observation. But they say little about what happens when accurate observation is not possible. Solutions has covered the use of infrared or thermal imaging equipment for security and maintenance purposes where it can be used to discover hidden persons or overheating machinery. But one ship operator has found another use for the technology that could prove beneficial for ships that are obliged to navigate in port during the hours of darkness.
