The war in Iraq may be one of the major obstacles standing between commercial shipping and a revolutionary new propulsion source. High-temperature superconductor motors, which promise significant benefits in fuel costs in addition to being lighter and smaller than conventional engines, are ready for testing but the US Navy has delayed the process because of other war-related projects.
