Buquebus is a shipping line dedicated to the transportation of passengers and vehicles between Argentina and Uruguay, crossing the wide river that separates these countries. The company started in the late 1970s as a family enterprise, with only one old refurbished ship, serving a single line connecting the cities of Buenos Aires, Argentina and Colonia, Uruguay across the River Plate. Two more vessels (second-hand conventional ferries) were incorporated during the 1980s, but the milestone in the company's development was the incorporation of large-capacity high-speed light craft (HSLC) in the early 1990s, an acquisition which forever changed the passenger and vehicle traffic on the River Plate.
