Oil can leak from all types of deck machinery and, therefore, find its way into the water, but the most likely cause will be a leaking stern tube or rudder bearing. if a propeller shaft's rotation is misaligned, the integrity of a seal will eventually be compromised; when the aft seal succumbs, oil will escape. A fishing line or rope caught on a ship's rotating shaft can also damage the aft seal, allowing stern tube oil to flow out.
