Under the rainbow

Swimming beneath a rainbow has a fanciful appeal to Judy Dioszegi. In 1988, the Centre Club, a fitness and wellness center connected to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Ill., hired Dioszegi's design firm to liven up its pool house with a vibrant splash of multicolored banners. The club, which blends fitness activities with medically supervised health programs, was a brand new facility when the original rainbow waves job was completed. Rich Schoeneman, the Centre Club manager, had asked Dioszegi and her team to create a design that made the swimmers' space more civilized and inviting. Previously, the firm had completed banner design work in the club's gymnasium, so the client was particularly confident and enthusiastic about the work Dioszegi could offer. The general environment of the pool house consists of a five-lane, 25m lap and exercise pool with fully appointed locker rooms, sauna, steam room, whirlpool and warm water therapy pool. The workspace "canvas" assigned to Dioszegi was the bare ceiling over the swimming pool that measured 29.71m by 12.95m―a total of 372.93 sq. m of unremarkable drabness.
