If arboretums are places for growing trees, why not cultivate treehouses too? That's exactly what the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum recently decided to do to raise public awareness about the ecological and social importance of trees. As part of its legacy of innovation in landscape design, the Arboretum sponsored a competition open to architects, landscape architects and other builders to design and build a "treehouse" for installation during the summer of 2004. With a construction stipend of $3,000, the 12 winning teams built their projects in the spring of 2004. For boldness of color, transparency, and movement, four projects using a range of fabric types are stars in the show.
