Developing high performance scientific simulation codes is an expensive process, due in part to the complexity of the phenomena to be simulated, but the difficulty is often exacerbated by the proliferation and evolution of computer architectures. The Advanced Computational Software (ACTS) Collection comprises a set of freely available general-purpose computational tools that are aimed at simplifying scientific software development. The ACTS Collection brings together portable tools that were developed by independent research projects supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and which focus on the solution of large-scale problems on high performance computers. In addition to distributing the software tools, the ACTS Project provides a software support infrastructure that addresses issues related to software reusability, portability, interoperability, and robustness; and provides long-term high-level support for users in the international computational science community, beginning with active promotion of the tools and training of users. ACTS has been seeking to attend the needs of this community by proposing solutions that can potentially attenuate the efforts required for developing, maintaining, and optimizing complex and scalable high performance codes.
