Drastic reductions of up to 50% for 2009 and 100% for 2010 in deep sea fishing opportunities, adopted on 1 October, confirm the European Commission's determination to continue the effort under way since 2006 to bring catch levels for the most threatened species to zero. Its decision is based on recent scientific advice, which confirms the deterioration of the biological state of many deep water stocks. The Fisheries Council is set to reach political agreement on the catch limits applicable to deep sea fisheries at its meeting in late November. The Commission's proposals are based on advice provided by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), which is then subject to review by the Commission's Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee on Fisheries (STECF).
