New Protocol On Protection Of Mediterranean Coastline

The Mediterranean coastal areas are suffering from considerable environmental pressure as well as degradation of their coastal resources. This is why a new protocol on the integrated management of coastal areas, concluded in the framework of the Barcelona Convention on the protection of the marine environment and the Mediterranean coastline, recommends a series of measures aimed at protecting these areas. Concluded in January 2008, the protocol was signed by the EU member states party to the Barcelona Convention. By proposing a draft decision to the Council, on 3 October, the European Commission has invited member states to approve this protocol in the name of the European Community. The protocol targets the implementation of Article 4, Paragraph 3 of the convention, which invites signatory parties to promote the integrated management of the coastline, taking account of the protection of areas of ecological and environmental interest and the rational use of natural resources.
