EU launches revision of 'ozone' regulation

The European Commission presented, on 1 August, a proposal to revise the regulation on ozone-depleting substances'. The idea is to simplify the existing regulation and reflect the progress made by the European Union so far. The revision brings the regulation into line with the latest international agreements, particularly with a view to the expedited phase-out of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) under the Montreal Protocol and the total phase-out of substances for which alternatives are available. The Commission proposes to improve implementation of Regulation EC 2037/2000 by clarifying or deleting certain definitions and provisions, such as those on exemptions and/or derogations to the use of ozone-depleting substances and the conditions under which they can be imported and exported.
