Budapest To Host Eit Headquarters

The headquarters of the European Institute of Technology and Innovation (EIT), a new establishment charged with fostering business investment in innovation, will be placed in Budapest. This choice was rubber-stamped at an Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) of EU research ministers, on 18 June. Poland, the only remaining contender, unblocked the decision at a ministers' lunch preceding the conference. At a previous meeting, on 30 May, the Polish delegation refused to concede even though its candi- date, Wroclaw, failed to get enough support. All the other 26 member states supported the Hungarian capital, after the other contestants - Jena (Germany), Sant Cugat del Valles (Spain), and a joint candidacy by the Austrian and Slovak capitals, Vienna and Bratislava - withdrew from the race.
