The European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries is satisfied on the whole with the draft regulation on the prevention and elimination of illegal, unre-ported and unregulated fishing (IUU) COM(2007)0602, which it sees as meeting most of Parliament's demands. It nevertheless insists that the regulation must apply to all vessels, from both the EU and third countries, and that penalties imposed on fraudsters must be sufficiently dissuasive. With their unanimous adoption, on 19 May, of an own-initiative report by Marie-Helene Aubert (Greens-EFA, France), MEPs voiced broad support for the draft IUU regulation. They stressed, however, that the regulation must be fully compatible with the draft regulation on fisheries control, due out next autumn.
