Commission lays down radical pathway

The long-awaited and much-delayed European Commission directive on promoting renewable energy aims to establish an overall binding target of 20% renewable energy in energy consumption. Three sectors are concerned: electricity, heating and cooling and transport. The directive will also set a 10% binding minimum target for biofuels in transport as well as a biofuels sustainability regime. Additionally, there will be individual and binding national renewables targets, for 2020, so as to reach the overall EU target of 20%. The Commission hopes mat its directive, and the 20% target, will boost the sector to one million jobs by 2020, up from a current renewable energy technology turnover of some €20 billion and 300,000 jobs.
