ETS: List of airlines published in OJ

The list of airlines to be included in the Community Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) as of 1 January 2012 is now known. It appears in the Official Journal of the EU dated 22 August (OJ L219) and includes some 4,000 airlines operating from or to Europe, which will be required to set a ceiling on their CO_2 emissions to avoid having to purchase permits to pollute. A revised preliminary list was published in February 2009. According to the EU directive organising the ETS system for the aviation sector (2008/101/EC) airlines will have to limit their CO, emissions to 97% of the 2004-2006 average. This 97% - which will fall to 95% from 1 January 2013 - corresponds to a number of quotas, of which 15% will need to be purchased by the airlines, the remainder being freely distributed. This means that the sector will have to pay if it emits a CO_2 volume superior to just under 85% of the 2004-2006 average.
