EFSA recommends better treatment of dairy cows

"Over the last thirly years, genetic selection for higher milk yield has changed the body shape and increased the size of dairy cows, therefore increasing their requirement for space", says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in a report on animal welfare entitled 'Scientific opinion on the overall effects of farming systems on dairy cow welfare and disease'1, published on 10 July. The FFSA maintains that there is a correlation between the genetic selection and the frequency of incidences of lameness, inflammation of the uddersrn(mastitis) and metabolic and reproductive disorders in dairy cows, Il therefore recommends several measures to improve the wellbeing of these animals.
