Loan schemes to be launched for Western Balkans renewables

At a conference on investing in electricity generation and renewable energy, organised jointly by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Energy Community, two new loan programmes were launched. The Western Balkans Sustainable Energy Credit Line (€50 million) and Sustainable Energy Direct Financing Facility (€60 million) both aim to reduce the region's dismal record on energy and carbon intensity as well as promote 'green' sources of energy. The conference, on 30-31 March in Sarajevo, saw keynote speeches from Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs as well as EBRD President Thomas Mirow. The conference comes at a time as members of the Energy Community, which applies EU legislation in the energy sphere, begin to consider the adoption of new EU legislation to promote renewable energy.
