Eu Stance On Commercial Whaling

The EU is to plead in favour of maintaining the moratorium imposed in 1986 by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) on commercial whaling, as provided by the negotiation mandate issued to the European Commission, on 2 March, by the Environment Council. At the same time, it could support the continuation of 'traditional' hunting if certain conditions, particularly with regard to slaughter, are met. The Commission will defend these positions during the forthcoming IWC meetings, to be held in Rome, from 9 to 12 March (intermediary session) and Madeira, in June 2009.
