摘要

Three years after a new European safety standard was proposed for baby walkers, these products are now "presumed" to be safe on the EU market. The new standard was published in the Official Journal on 13 January 2009', following its adoption in 2008 by the European Commission, the member states and the European Parliament.rnThe new standards are meant to prevent safety hazards for toddlers who may move around at excessive speed in baby walkers or may tip over or fall down stairs. Thousands of such accidents are known to havernoccurred when using these products. The new EU standard introduces design and manufacturing requirements that should make these wheeled devices more stable and should reduce the risk of tipping over. ANEC, the European consumer voice in standardisation, is happy with the new standard, although it would not have said 'no' to a ban - as happened in Canada -either. The organisation says this new standard introduces major improvements: "We welcome the standard but we still do not consider the baby walkers to be a real safe product.
