Climate Change And Biodiversity Key Concerns For 2009

Unsurprisingly, the fight against climate change is the number one priority identified by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in its annual report 'EEA signals 2009 - Key environmental issues facing Europe'. This report~1, made public on 9 January in Prague, in the presence of the Czech Environment Minister Martin Bursik and Jacqueline McGlade, executive director of the EEA, highlights the existing link between climate change and other environmental problems and the need to deal with them simultaneously.rn"This year will be an historic one for the environment, highlighted by a major meeting of the United Nations on climate change in Copenhagen in December," underlined McGlade, for whom "Greenhouse gas emissions are merely a symptom of a much more serious problem: we are incapable of living sustainably". Nevertheless, she says, "the scale of these environmental problems should not condemn us to inaction. [...] In the end, it is a question of re-evaluating the fundamental elements of life".
