Textiles: EP backs compulsory country of origin labelling

Invited to give their opinion on a proposal by the European Commission aimed at shortening the deadline required to market new fibres', MEPs decided, on 18 May in the plenary session, in favour of the compulsory country of origin labelling of textiles imported into the EU and products manufactured in Europe. 'Made in' labels will be compulsory and the country of manufacture will be the one in which 50% of the product has been made. In this respect, they are transforming a technical proposal into a more political act, "which gives them hope of being of greater interest to the Council and facilitating negotiations," specified the rapporteur, Toine Manders (ALDE, Netherlands).
