Solar thermal contracts 10% in 2009

The economic crisis and cutbacks in renewables support hit the solar thermal industry in 2009. In its latest market statistics, the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (ESTIF) notes a downturn of 10% in the sales of solar thermal. Solar thermal energy (STE) uses solar energy for heating and cooling, unlike photovoltaics, which converts solar energy into electricity. The 10% reduction is all the more painful as the previous year, 2008, saw growth of 60%.rnLast month, ESTIF reacted strongly to Gennany's immediate ban on further federal support for solar heating, biomass and heat pump installations.
