New group to promote smart metering and grid management

A new industry grouping was launched, on 15 November, bringing together utili ties, technology companies and industry groups in a Smart Energy Demand Coali tion (SEDC). The group was launched at a Belgian Presidency conference on the EU's Strategic Energy Technology (SET) plan. The SEDC notes that European consumer oriented and demand-centred smart grid programmes are lagging well behind other global markets. The coalition warns that if the trend continues, Europe could poten tially miss out on tens of billions of euro per year in savings and carbon emission reductions.
