Union to support stable or slightly reduced bluef in tuna quotas

EU member states agreed, on 17 November, to negotiate a global fishing quota for bluefin tuna. It was at the last minute - and after the 48 member coun tries of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) had already begun their work in Paris (17-27 November) - that the 27 member states unanimously adopted the negotiating mandate authorising the European Commission to speak on behalf of the EU in Paris.rn"Conscious of the precarious situation with regard to bluefin tuna stocks and the need for sustainable management, the EU has reached a compromise, which guar antees it an ambitious position and gives negotiators enough margin for manoeuvre to take into account local dynamics," con sidered the Belgian Presidency of the EU in a press release.
