Cities and local authorities sign global pact

Meeting in Mexico, on 21 November, representatives from cities and local authorities all over the world signed a voluntary pact - the 'Mexico Pact' - in which they commit to promoting strategies and actions aimed at mitigat ing greenhouse gas emissions, taking measures to help cities adapt to the impacts of climate change and cooper ating among themselves with the aim of increasing direct access to international climate funding for cities. Michel Dele barre, mayor of Dunkerque, France, and vice-president of the EU's Committee of the Regions, believes that the Mexico summit is a follow-up to the move ment initiated in view of the Copenha gen climate change conference where, for the first time, local authorities were acknowledged and able to make themselves heard.
