Parliament strengthens directive on hazardous substances

More products and equipment should be covered by legislation that bans certain hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment (EEE), according to the European Parliament. MEPs approved in plenary, on 24 November, the recast of the directive that limits the use of certain hazardous substances in EEE, presented by the Commission in December 2008. The vote formalises an agreement with the Council on the update of this legislation.rn"We would have preferred even stronger legislation, with explicit restrictions on new substances, but the final compromise represents a clear improvement on the current situation," commented rapporteur Jill Evans (Greens-EFA, UK).
