Council decisions on health claims on foods

During the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council meeting, on 21 October, the EU's ministers did not oppose the adoption of three legislative acts by the European Commission concerning health claims on foodstuffs, covered by comitology procedure. The first act concerned a draft regulation disputing the claims made on behalf of Immunofortis and Eye Q: it had been declared of the former that it strengthened babies' immune systems and the latter, it was claimed, improved children's memories. The second draft regulation disputes the claims made on behalf of Catalgine concerning the alleged reduction of hot flushes in children, while the third legislative act seeks to modify the annexes to Directive 95/2/CE concerning food additives other than colours and sweeteners. If the European Parliament does not make any objections, the Commission will be able to formally adopt these texts.
