A high-level conference, organised in Brussels by the Belgian EU Presidency, examined how to boost excellence in universities and other research organisations. Summarising the outcome of the two-day conference, which ended on 15 October, Brussels Research Minister BenoTt Cer-exhe stressed the fact that excellence goes hand in hand with the freedom of decision, including financial autonomy with respect to public and private financiers.rnCerexhe summed up the conference as pleading for university public funding to be based more on performance and competition between institutions. "Of course, this should not be at the expense of the essential mission of training and education. Autonomy implies responsibility," said Cerexhe, speaking to journalists at the end of the conference.
