Parliament rejects colour coding

On 16 June, the European Parliament rejected the introduction of a colour-coding system as part of the draft regulation on the provision of food information to consumers. Three political groups (S&D, Greens-EFA, EUL-NGL) had filed an amendment (134) prior to the vote aimed at showing the food's content in essential nutrients (fats, saturated fats, carbohydrates and salt) using a colour code: "For complex foods [...] the declaration on the front of the package must be immediately comprehensible to consumers, to which a colour code would contribute," it stated. Such a declaration, combined with the recommended daily requirement, would enable consumers, upon closer reading, to leam the precise nutritional value of the key nutrients.
