Health Commissioner John Dalli defended his proposal aimed at breaking the stalemate on authorisations for genetically modified (GMO) crops in the EU by giving member states the choice to apply them or not, despite the misgivings of certain countries. "We are doing what we promised to do," he said, on 24 June, during a visit to the port of Antwerp, through which a large share of fruit and vegetable imports in Europe transit.
