The proposed acquisition of the global sunflower seed business of the US company Monsanto by Syngenta of Switzerland could give rise to competition concerns related to the breeding and marketing of sunflower seeds and sunflower seed treatment products in Europe. The European Commission therefore decided, on 21 June, to open an in-depth investigation into the transaction under the Merger Regulation.
