The EP's Environment Committee (ENVI) unanimously approved, on 26 January, the EU's ratification of the Cooperation Agreement for the protection of the coasts and waters of the North-East Atlantic against pollution (known as the Lisbon Agreement).rnThe agreement is part of a group of regional maritime accords the EU has signed with certain member states and non-EU countries. This 'network' of agreements includes the Helsinki Convention for protection of the Baltic Sea (1992), the Bonn Agreement for protection of the North Sea (1983), thernBarcelona Convention for protection of the Mediterranean Sea (1976) and the Lisbon Agreement for the protection of the North-East Atlantic, signed in 1990. This latest text never entered into force due to a territorial dispute between Spain and Morocco over the 'Southern limit' (Western Sahara), to which its Article 3 refers. An additional protocol, which settles this matter, was signed in May 2008 by Portugal, Spain, France and Morocco and by the European Union, in March 2009.
