Climate: Ministers discuss 'intermediate solution'

The informal meeting of the EU's environment ministers, which ended on 12 July in Sopot, Poland, saw the unofficial emergence of the idea of an "intermediate solution" for the international negotiations on the future of the Kyoto Protocol. This minimalist solution, which some ministers seem to anticipate out of pragmatism without really supporting it, will not be the European Union's official position for the Durban conference, however. The ministers will present the official position at the conclusion of the formal Council, on 10 October.
