The European Commission authorised, on 8 February, an Austrian scheme supporting the generation of renewable energy, having found it to be in line with EU rules on state aid. This is because it creates incentives for an increased use of renewable energy while containing safeguards to limit distortions of competition. This aid - financed through parafiscal charges - is designed to assist Austria in reaching, by 2020, targets for a 'green' Europe by developing energy production from renewable sources.
