Italy has not yet solved the waste crisis plaguing the Naples region and risks being slapped with serious financial penalties, warned Commissioner Janez Potocnik after a meeting with Italian Environment Minister Corrado Clini, on 25 January. Potocnik acknowledged that "important progress" has been made in recent months, but "the situation has not been stabilised". "This is a race against the clock," added the commissioner, who went on to note that if Rome does not comply with rules by March, the Commission will initiate new proceedings that include a request for financial sanctions.
