Herring war: Tension between coastal states eases slightly

Confidence-building may still be needed but at least the countries involved in the "herring war" (EU, Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and the Russian Federation) re-established contact at a meeting in London, on 2-3 September. It closed with the decision to set up a scientific working group on the Atlanto-Scan-dian herring zone. This is an "important first step towards assuring shared management of this stock," commented Faroese Fisheries Minister Jacob Vestergaard.
