New provisions to ensure independence of national authorities

Rules on the independence of national safety authorities, stress tests on nuclear plants, EU-wide safety objectives and the transparency of information are the main changes made by the European Commission to the June 2009 directive on nuclear safety. With these new provisions, demanded by the Council in 2011, the EU will give itself the instruments it needs to prevent nuclear disasters like the Fuku-shima accident in 2011 or Chernobyl in 2006, in line with the Commission's wishes.
