The compromise amendment hammered out by the political groups is to be adopted in the European Parliament's Committee on Transport (TRAN), on 18 March. MEPs were expected to state whether or not they supported the cross-border circulation of gigaliners, massive trucks of up to 25 metres long and weighing as much 60 tonnes. In they end, they have decided to wait before giving an opinion. A report on the weight and dimensions of vehicles that should be adopted in TRAN on 18 March will no doubt eliminate the measures in the proposal that permit the cross-border circulation of these giant trucks - without explicitly forbidding it. Therefore, the current situation - where Directive 96/53/EC allows these trucks, which are authorised in a number of member states, to cross some borders and not others - will continue.
