When authors made books: a first look at the content and form of self-published works in Paris (1750-1791)

This article focuses on material and editorial issues as part of the self-publishing process experienced by authors in Paris at the end of the Old Regime. Because they did not sell their manuscript to booksellers-publishers, who then normally had exclusive authority over its publication, authors who published on their own had the opportunity to deal directly with printers, and thus be involved in the book-making process. Did the fact that these writers had, presumably, more control over the publishing process have any influence on what they published and on the material quality of their books? In order to provide some answers to these questions, the article will examine the particularities of what was self-published in the French capital between 1750 and 1791 with regard to content - by looking at the types of works thus produced - and with regard to form - by examining different material criteria such as editorial and financial choices. Cet article met de l'avant la question de la matérialité en regard des livres publiés par leurs auteurs à Paris au cours des quelques décennies précédant la Révolution française. Parce qu'ils ne cédaient pas leurs manuscrits à des libraires-éditeurs qui avaient alors un pouvoir exclusif sur leur publication, les auteurs qui publiaient par eux-mêmes avaient la chance de traiter directement avec des imprimeurs et tenaient ainsi un rôle accru dans le processus de publication. Est-ce que le présumé contrôle exercé par ces auteurs sur la publication de leurs œuvres avait un effet sur le genre d'écrits qu'ils souhaitaient voir imprimés et sur la qualité matérielle de leurs livres? Afin d'apporter quelques réponses à ces questions, cet article tente de cerner les particularités des livres publiés par leurs auteurs à Paris entre 1750 et 1791 en ce qui a trait au contenu - en examinant les types d'œuvres ainsi produites - et en ce qui a trait à la forme - en examinant différents critères matériels en tant que choix financiers et éditoriaux.
