CBT: the obscuring of power in the name of science

摘要

I suggest that the most important factor that may determine whether or not the client deems a therapy relationship successful is the dynamics of power in this relationship. If therapists take control, and do not think carefully how to avoid domination during therapy, how can we expect clients to walk away feeling more in control? In this paper I explore how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) addresses the issue of power in therapy and suggest that there are some problems with the CBT model, which mean that CBT therapists need to give this issue some serious consideration.
