Airports are excellent examples of very large, dynamic and complex systems with many interacting traffic modes and numerous services. The interdependencies between traffic modes and services is a result of the number of groups of stakeholders, each group operating within different fields with different goals but all generally aiming for significant improvements of airport safety and efficiency. Situation awareness is therefore a core issue for airport stakeholders to better monitor safety breaches derived from infringement to airport operational procedures. The paper presents how technological progresses within GPS/EGNOS and Wi-Fi devices can be used to improve surveillance of airport surface movements, namely in the apron area. The AAS system is described as a case study where such technological progresses can contribute to improve the efficiency of apron procedures and increase the perceived level of situational awareness among ground handling staff, without compromising safety.
