The cooling of gas turbine blades with air from the compressor caused a decisive technology jump to enable higher inlet temperature and thus efficiencies. A further step could be the cooling with evaporating water in a closed cycle. Thereby, small water mass flow rates are needed because of the efficient cooling performance. This cooling is optimum in a combined cycle with superheating of the cooling steam in the heat recovery steam generator and expansion in the steam turbine.
