Paul ten Have, Doing Conversation Analysis

Paul ten Have's original edition, published in 1999, was one of a small number of full-length introductions to conversation analysis (CA). It has stood the test of time, and is the only one yet to have been reissued in a new edition. The value of the book is in its careful guiding of the student through the stages of casting a question in CA terms (something it takes a while for some students to become comfortable with), then collecting data, transcribing it and analysing it. Other books, and chapters in methods volumes, do that, but not so painstakingly and with such a depth of detail. This is avowedly a how-to book, but it is certainly not one for dummies; the level is at advanced undergraduate or research student, and this is no list of recipes. One of the welcome features of the first edition was its commitment to the ethnomethodological theory underlying (sometimes invisibly so) CA, and in this second edition ten Have has kept faith with CA's origins while giving more space to comparing and contrasting CA with neighbouring disciplines. Inevitably, this is more abbreviated than in Robin Wooffitt's Conversation Analysis and Discourse Analysis (2005), but is very welcome in what may be a more widely used text.
