Patrick B. Mullen, The Man Who Adores the Negro

The title comes from Frantz Fanon: 'To us, the man who adores the Negro is as "sick" as the man who abominates him.' This statement acts as a kind of provocation for white people with a love of what is referred to as black music, forcing them to examine what that love involves psychologically and culturally and what political implications it may have for ethnic interaction and understanding. For this reason it acts as the epigraph to this book. Drawing on over 35 years of field-work experience, Patrick Mullen is concerned with the history of folklore scholarship in the US, with how African Americans have been represented as a folk from the late 19th century and with how this has reverberated on the identities of white folklorists. It is a tremendously important subject.
