The health of journalism and the health of democracy go hand in hand. The problem is that both journalism and democracy are rarely in the pink. This is Geraldine Muhlmann's starting point in her excellent new book. What follows is that one must be prepared to criticize both journalism and democracy, in their particular manifestations, while not using journalistic critique as a shield for attacking or undermining democracy, and not falling back on idealistic notions of either journalism or democracy.
